Purpose:

Students will identify and “clean up” common typing bad habits while completing a series of typing accuracy challenges. The goal is to reinforce proper techniques and reduce errors through mindful practice.  It will help reinforce proper hand placement, posture, and accuracy.

Procedure:

1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Make sure each student has a copy of the “Exit Ticket: Typing Habit Checklist”.  Have students type a short spring-themed passage focusing on speed only—mistakes don’t matter yet.

Example Passage:  “Spring brings sunshine, blooming flowers, and fresh starts. It’s time to clear the clutter and type with care!”

Afterward, students record answers to the first three questions on the Exit Ticket (linked above).

2. Typing Habit Check-Up (5 minutes)

On the Exit Ticket (linked above), have students circle bad habits they notice in themselves.  They can provide examples of their own if they choose.

Review and reinforce good habits:

  • Feet flat, back straight

  • Wrists up, fingers on home row

  • Eyes on screen

3. Accuracy Tune-Up (10–15 minutes)

Assign a passage for slow, accurate typing (goal: 98–100% accuracy).  Correct all errors before moving on.  Encourage good habits as they are typing.

Sample Passage:
“Spring cleaning isn’t just for your room—it’s for your typing too! Good habits like posture, finger placement, and staying focused can make a big difference.”

Repeating the passage 3-5 times

4. Reflection & Rewards (5 minutes)

Afterward, students record answers to the last three questions on the Exit Ticket (linked above).  Optional: Give out “Typing Clean Freak” badges for improvement or effort.

Variations:

Blindfold students or cover their hands so students cannot look at their fingers while typing for accuracy.

For an added challenge, use the KeyMaster® Keyboard to blank out the learner’s keys as they work through the typing activities.

Materials Needed:

Computers or Chromebooks with a typing program (like Typing.com, Typesy.com, or Google Docs).

Time Required:

30-45 minutes.
